Tekoah Roby
Tekoah Roby Lands on Triple-A IL
Tue, Jul 15, 2025, 11:04 AM
Triple-A Memphis placed Roby on the 7-day injured list Monday due to an unspecified injury.
Analysis: Roby has been lights out lately at Memphis, allowing just two earned runs with a 21:5 K:BB over 21 innings covering his last four starts. The Cardinals haven't provided word on the nature of his latest health concern, but Roby's injury history is lengthy, and his issues have often involved his pitching shoulder. Added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster over the offseason, Roby has posted a 3.10 ERA and 87:19 K:BB across 78.1 frames between Double-A Springfield and Memphis in 2025.
Riley O'Brien
Riley O'Brien Excelling out of St. Louis bullpen
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 8:52 AM
O'Brien has permitted just one run and boasts a 20:8 K:BB over 16 innings covering his last 12 appearances.
Analysis: O'Brien has had trouble staying healthy and producing at the major-league level, but the stuff has always been there and he seems to finally be finding his footing. The 30-year-old netted his second hold of the season in Sunday's win over Atlanta and could continue to be elevated in the Cardinals' bullpen hierarchy.
Jose Fermin
Jose Fermin Cranks first big-league homer
Mon, Jul 14, 2025, 8:36 AM
Fermin went 1-for-4 with a go-ahead, two-run home run in Sunday's win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Making his first major-league start in left field and just his second career start at any outfield position, Fermin broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run blast off of Jesse Chavez in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was the first major-league home run in the career of Fermin, who was playing his 10th game this season and 76th game of his career. Fermin is traditionally an infielder, but he could some starts in the corner outfield spots versus lefties while Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Jordan Walker (appendix) are out.
Ryan Helsley
Ryan Helsley Escapes with save
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 9:37 PM
Helsley allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning while earning a save against Atlanta on Sunday. He struck out one batter.
Analysis: Helsley put two runners on base with no outs but escaped the jam and finished off the 5-4 win. After blowing three straight chances in early June, he's converted six straight while allowing only one run over his last eight outings. Helsley owns a 3.27 ERA and a 36:14 K:BB while converting 19 of his 24 save chances this season.
Ivan Herrera
Ivan Herrera Swipes two bags
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 9:23 PM
Herrera went 1-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Sunday's win over Atlanta.
Analysis: Herrera singled in the first inning and drew a walk in the third. He would swipe second base after each of those plate appearances. It was Herrera's first appearance since June 19 after a stint on the injured list for a hamstring issue, so the stolen bases were a very positive sign. He owns a strong .320/.394/.529 slash line with three stolen bases and 16 extra-base hits through 175 plate appearances.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Fans five in short outing
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 9:20 PM
Gray did not factor in the decision during Sunday's win over Atlanta. He allowed a run on three over three innings while striking out five.
Analysis: Gray was working through a solid outing before a rain delay cut it short. He threw a pair of scoreless frames before yielding an RBI single to Matt Olson in the third inning. Since coughing up six runs in Milwaukee on June 12, Gray has posted a 2.54 ERA over 28.1 innings. He's produced a terrific 79:9 K:BB over his last 12 outings. Gray will carry a 3.50 ERA and a 118:19 K:BB into the All-Star break.
Nolan Gorman
Nolan Gorman Nursing back issue
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 1:45 PM
Gorman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus Atlanta due to lower-back pain, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gorman could be available off the bench, though with the All-Star break looming, the Cardinals may prefer to stay away from him Sunday. Ivan Herrera (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will enter the lineup at designated hitter in place of Gorman, who had started each of the last three games while going 3-for-10 with a home run and two walks. Though Herrera projects to serve as St. Louis' primary DH in the second half, Gorman could still see action at second base against right-handed pitching, while Brendan Donovan covers left field in place of the injured Lars Nootbaar (rib).
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Remains out of lineup
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 1:41 PM
Arenado (finger) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta.
Analysis: Arenado will miss a second straight start while he recovers from the right index finger sprain he sustained Friday. The injury is a recurrence of one that he originally suffered June 30, but with the All-Star break on the horizon, Arenado should be ready to go when the Cardinals open their second-half schedule next Friday in Arizona.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Shelved with rib sprain
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 12:44 PM
St. Louis placed Nootbaar on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a left costochondral sprain.
Analysis: Nootbaar will be sidelined through at least July 23 after he was removed from Saturday's 7-6 loss to Atlanta due to side discomfort. The outfielder had also been lifted from a game two days earlier due to the same issue, so the Cardinals opted to give him some extra time off. St. Louis activated Ivan Herrera (hamstring) from the IL in a corresponding move.
Ivan Herrera
Ivan Herrera Activated, serving as DH
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 12:41 PM
Herrera (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and will start at designated hitter and bat second in Sunday's game against Atlanta.
Analysis: St. Louis placed outfielder Lars Nootbaar (rib) on the 10-day injured list to reopen a spot on the 26-man active roster for Herrera, who went 4-for-7 with a double, an RBI and a run in two rehab games for Triple-A Memphis prior to being activated. Herrera didn't play behind the plate during his rehab assignment, and his playing time at catcher could be limited over the rest of the season while St. Louis aims to keep him healthy while he's already hit the shelf twice this season, first due to a left knee bone bruise and most recently due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The 25-year-old has been exceptionally productive when available, batting .320 with eight home runs, one stolen base, 36 RBI and 22 runs through 42 games for St. Louis.
Tink Hence
Tink Hence Back on IL at Double-A
Sun, Jul 13, 2025, 11:06 AM
Hence (undisclosed) was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Springfield on Saturday.
Analysis: Hence didn't make his season debut until late May as he recovered from a right rib cage strain, but it's not clear whether this latest trip to the IL is a recurrence or a different injury. The 22-year-old has been limited to just 21.1 innings in 2025, allowing five runs with a 14:6 K:BB over 10.2 frames during his time with Springfield.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Pulled with side discomfort
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 3:05 PM
Nootbaar was removed from Saturday's game against Atlanta due to left side discomfort, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Nootbaar has been dealing with a ribcage/intercostal injury over the past several weeks, which may have had something to do with his early removal Saturday. With the All-Star break quickly approaching, the Cardinals could look to get the 27-year-old an extra day of rest and sit him for Sunday's first-half finale.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Sitting out Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 11:34 AM
Arenado (finger) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game versus Atlanta.
Analysis: Arenado sprained his right index finger during Friday's contest -- the second time he's done so in the past two weeks. He'll take a day off to heal Saturday, and the Cardinals may opt to keep him on the bench until play resumes following the All-Star break.
Pedro Pages
Pedro Pages Resting Saturday
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 11:32 AM
Pages isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta.
Analysis: After going 1-for-2 with two RBI during Friday's loss, Pages will give way to Yohel Pozo behind the dish.
Matt Svanson
Matt Svanson Headed back to minors
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:50 AM
The Cardinals optioned Svanson to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.
Analysis: Svanson has been fairly reliable out of the bullpen for the Cardinals this season, turning in a 3.12 ERA and 0.81 WHIP through 26 innings. However, the Cardinals will prioritize filling their bullpen with a fresh arm heading into the All-Star break, so the 26-year-old will head back to Triple-A in favor of Gordon Graceffo.
Gordon Graceffo
Gordon Graceffo Returns to St. Louis
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:48 AM
The Cardinals recalled Graceffo from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.
Analysis: Graceffo owns a 6.62 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 17.2 innings with the Cardinals this season, but he's given up just one run in 7.1 frames since being sent to Triple-A on June 23. His recent turnaround will afford him another chance with the big club, and he'll replace Matt Svanson in St. Louis' bullpen.
Thomas Saggese
Thomas Saggese Will work out in outfield
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:30 AM
Saggese will go through pregame workouts and possibly see game action in the outfield, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Saggese has never played the outfield in pro ball, but increasing his versatility would give him another path to playing time, particularly with the Cardinals being left-handed heavy in the outfield. The 23-year-old has not yet found his swing at the big-league level, slashing just .241/.256/.342 in 26 contests. It seems likelier that Saggese's test drive in the outfield ultimately comes at Triple-A Memphis, once Ivan Herrera (hamstring) and Jordan Walker (appendix) return from the 10-day injured list.
Jordan Walker
Jordan Walker No timetable for activation
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:24 AM
The Cardinals have no specific timetable for Walker's (appendix) activation from the 10-day injured list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Walker is physically recovered from a bout with appendicitis, but the Cardinals are having him work on a swing change on his rehab assignment at Double-A Springfield and want to see some positive results at the plate before activating him. Those positive results have yet to come, as Walker is 5-for-38 with 14 strikeouts thus far in 10 rehab games between Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. He did homer Thursday at Springfield, so perhaps that was a step in the right direction. Walker's role with the Cardinals upon his return is also up in the air, especially with Ivan Herrera (hamstring) returning as a designated hitter, which will likely keep Alec Burleson in the outfield.
Ivan Herrera
Ivan Herrera Working out in outfield
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 10:09 AM
Herrera (hamstring) was given pregame reps in the outfield with the Cardinals prior to beginning his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Herrera's playing time at catcher in the second half will be reduced -- if not outright eliminated -- as the Cardinals look to keep him healthy and also prioritize defense at the position. The 25-year-old will be the team's primary designated hitter down the stretch, but he's being worked out in the outfield "to see what that looks like," per manager Oliver Marmol. Herrera has played 14 games at catcher this season, so he is in danger of losing catcher eligibility heading into 2026, if your league uses a 20-game threshold. He is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list for the first game after the All-Star break.
Matthew Liberatore
Matthew Liberatore Overwhelmed by Atlanta in loss
Sat, Jul 12, 2025, 3:32 AM
Liberatore (6-7) took the loss Friday against Atlanta, giving up six runs on nine hits and one walk in three innings. He didn't record a strikeout.
Analysis: Liberatore matched his shortest outing of the year, and the six runs he surrendered were his most since his June 5 start. Friday's outing was his first this season without a strikeout, and the nine hits allowed tied his season high. Liberatore has still settled in as a consistent member of St. Louis' rotation during the first half of the campaign, logging a 4.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 80:22 K:BB over a career-high 100.1 frames.
