Ivan Herrera
Ivan Herrera Four hits in doubleheader
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:49 PM
Herrera went 4-for-8 with a double and two runs scored as the Cardinals split Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Phillies.
Analysis: Herrera missed over a month due to a left knee bone bruise. Since his return, he's gone 7-for-18 with three extra-base hits, three RBI and four runs scored, including an impressive performance in Wednesday's doubleheader. He was the designated hitter in the matinee game before returning to catching duties in the nightcap. He's had a hot bat in limited action this season, batting .385 with five homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases over 12 contests.
Brendan Donovan
Brendan Donovan On base four times in nightcap
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:46 PM
Donovan went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI, one walk and two runs scored in a 14-7 win over the Phillies in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Donovan entered this game 0-for-11 over his previous three contests, including an 0-for-4 effort in the matinee contest. That's an unusual cold spell for the utility player -- he had hit safely in the 10 games before that brief slump. Donovan has been a reliable hitter this year, batting .313 with an .824 OPS across 42 contests. He's added three home runs, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored, 12 doubles and three stolen bases while seeing the bulk of his playing time at second base.
Victor Scott II
Victor Scott II Swipes two bags in win
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:42 PM
Scott went 1-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored in a 14-7 win over the Phillies in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Scott didn't do much until late in the doubleheader -- he went 0-for-3 in the first game and didn't get his lone hit until the eighth inning of the nightcap. He also reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth. The speedster is up to 13 steals on 14 attempts this season, good for a share of fifth in the majors. He's added a reliable .278/.342/.383 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 22 runs scored, six doubles and a triple over 40 contests.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Stays hot with homer
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:35 PM
Nootbaar went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in a 14-7 win over the Phillies in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Nootbaar went 1-for-3 with a walk in the day game as well, extending his hitting streak to seven games. He has gone 11-for-30 (.367) during the streak, adding two homers, two doubles and six RBI. The outfielder continues to see steady playing time as the near-everyday left fielder and leadoff hitter. He's batting .256 with an .808 OPS, seven homers, 24 RBI, 28 runs scored and four stolen bases over 43 contests. The production isn't all that different from previous seasons, but he could hit some career highs just by staying healthy.
Alec Burleson
Alec Burleson Lifts homer in three-hit game
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:29 PM
Burleson went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and two additional RBI in a 14-7 win over the Phillies in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Burleson sat for the first game, though he went 0-for-1 off the bench after avoiding left-handed starter Jesus Luzardo. The 26-year-old Burleson then made a big impact in the second game, which saw him deliver a go-ahead homer in the third inning and a two-run single in the fourth. Over 11 contests in May, he's gone 10-for-32 (.313) with three homers and nine RBI. Burleson struggled to tap into his power in April, but he's starting to come around now. He's batting .274 with a .705 OPS, three long balls, 15 RBI, 11 runs scored and three stolen bases over 125 plate appearances overall.
Masyn Winn
Masyn Winn Strong showing Wednesday
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:25 PM
Winn went 5-for-8 with a home run, two walks, three RBI and three runs scored as the Cardinals split Wednesday's doubleheader with the Phillies.
Analysis: Winn did most of his damage in a 4-for-5 performance in the nightcap, which included a solo home run and a pair of RBI singles. The shortstop has hit safely in six of his last seven games, going 10-for-28 (.357) with two homers and seven RBI in that stretch. His big performance Wednesday lifted him to a .281/.371/.465 slash line with five homers, 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and two stolen bases over 33 contests this season. Aside from brief absences for back spasms and an ankle sprain, Winn has held down a starting role in the Cardinals' lineup this year.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Escapes with no-decision
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:21 PM
Gray allowed seven runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Gray was bad in his shortest start of the season, but Aaron Nola was even worse, allowing nine runs over 3.2 innings. Both starters gave up three homers, and Gray was lifted after 77 pitches (53 strikes) in this start. He has posted four quality starts over his last six outings, but the two exceptions have been ugly. Overall, the 35-year-old has a 4.50 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 51:12 K:BB across 50 innings through nine starts this season. Gray will look to get back on track next week, though he is projected for a tough home matchup versus the Tigers.
Erick Fedde
Erick Fedde Walks four in no-decision
Wed, May 14, 2025, 4:58 PM
Fedde allowed three hits and four walks while striking out three over 5.2 scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analysis: Fedde's control issues returned Wednesday after he pitched a six-hit shutout with no walks versus the Nationals last Friday. The right-hander didn't pay for his wildness in this start, which he finished with 93 pitches (51 strikes). Fedde lowered his ERA to 3.44, but his WHIP is elevated at 1.30, and he's not inspiring much confidence with a 32:25 K:BB over 52.1 innings. He's never been particularly reliant on strikeouts, but he's historically had trouble being any better than mediocre when carrying a BB/9 over 4.0. He's lined up for a tough matchup at home versus the Tigers next week.
Jordan Walker
Jordan Walker Bowing out of lineup for Game 2
Wed, May 14, 2025, 3:42 PM
Walker is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Phillies.
Analysis: Walker will hit the bench after he started in right field and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and his third stolen base of the season in the Cardinals' 2-1 loss in Game 1. The 22-year-old is currently holding down a .184/.254/.248 slash line on the season, and his ongoing struggles at the dish are beginning to cost him playing time. He'll be on the bench for the fifth time in a 12-game stretch as the Cardinals wrap up their series in Philadelphia.
Sem Robberse
Sem Robberse Needs Tommy John surgery
Wed, May 14, 2025, 11:54 AM
Robberse is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Robberse missed time during the second half of last season with an elbow injury and recent imaging showed that he needs to have the elbow surgically repaired. Given the timing of the procedure, he will likely be sidelined until around midseason next year. Robberse holds a 4.96 ERA and 139:59 K:BB over 134.1 innings at the Triple-A level.
Sem Robberse
Sem Robberse Shifted to full-season IL
Wed, May 14, 2025, 10:21 AM
Robberse (undisclosed) has been transferred to the full-season injured list at Triple-A Memphis.
Analysis: It's unclear what injury Robberse is dealing with, but he dealt with an elbow injury in the second half last season. The 23-year-old is on the Cardinals' 40-man roster but has yet to make his major-league debut. He's posted a 4.96 ERA and 139:59 K:BB over 134.1 innings at the Triple-A level.
Matt Svanson
Matt Svanson Added as 27th man
Wed, May 14, 2025, 9:15 AM
The Cardinals recalled Svanson from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Svanson will serve as the 27th man during Wednesday's doubleheader in Philadelphia. The right-handed reliever has permitted two runs with a 4:3 K:BB over 5.2 innings in the majors this season. He'll likely head back to Memphis after Wednesday's twin bill.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Start rained out
Tue, May 13, 2025, 2:10 PM
Gray's next start will be pushed back after Tuesday's game in Philadelphia was postponed due to inclement weather, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The two teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday. Gray will take the ball in second of those contests, with Erick Fedde starting the first game.
Matthew Liberatore
Matthew Liberatore Falls short of quality start
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:24 PM
Liberatore did not factor in the decision during Monday's win over Philadelphia. He allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings while striking out four.
Analysis: Liberatore kept the Phillies scoreless until Edmundo Sosa's RBI infield single in the fourth inning. Liberatore gave up another run in the sixth inning and was lifted before he could qualify for a quality start. He threw 56 of 80 pitches for strikes and generated 11 whiffs. Only one swinging strike came via the fastball, but his average velo was slightly up from 94.5 mph to 95 mph. Liberatore owns a solid 3.11 ERA with a 42:7 K:BB through 46.1 innings this season. He's projected for a start in Kansas City this weekend.
Ryan Helsley
Ryan Helsley Fans two for save
Mon, May 12, 2025, 10:16 PM
Helsley struck out two batters in a perfect inning to earn a save against Philadelphia on Monday.
Analysis: Helsley threw nine of 13 pitches for strikes to retire the Phillies' 8-9-1 hitters in order and close out the 3-2 win. He's converted eight of his 10 save chances this season, including four straight. He coughed up at least one run in back-to-back outings April 26 and May 2, but has since turned in four consecutive scoreless innings. Helsley owns a 3.00 ERA with a 16:10 K:BB through 15 frames.
Victor Scott II
Victor Scott II Sitting against southpaw
Mon, May 12, 2025, 1:21 PM
Scott is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Scott had been part of the lineup each of the last nine games -- including two starts against left-handed pitchers -- but he'll hit the bench for the series opener in Philadelphia while the Phillies send southpaw Cristopher Sanchez to the bump. Jose Barrero will draw the start in center field and could serve as an occasional platoon mate for Scott, who is slashing .226/.306/.258 with a 31.6 percent strikeout rate in 38 plate appearances against lefties on the season.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Breaks homerless streak Sunday
Sun, May 11, 2025, 4:23 PM
Arenado went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double and an additional run scored in Sunday's 6-1 win at Washington.
Analysis: With his 385-foot homer in the eighth inning off reliever Brad Lord, the veteran third baseman snapped an 11-game stretch without a long ball. Over that span, Arenado hit .256 (11-for-43) with a double, four runs scored and two RBI. Despite cracking only four homers through 159 plate appearances so far, Arenado has produced a solid .270/.352/.426 slash line with 19 runs scored and 16 RBI across 37 games.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Pops leadoff homer in win
Sun, May 11, 2025, 4:17 PM
Nootbaar went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk in Sunday's 6-1 victory against the Nationals.
Analysis: Nootbaar opened the game's scoring on the fifth pitch of the contest, taking southpaw MacKenzie Gore deep to right field. The long ball marked the seventh career leadoff home run for Nootbaar. Through 187 total plate appearances, the St. Louis outfielder is slashing .244/.369/.417 with six homers, 26 runs scores and 22 RBI while going 4-for-6 in steal attempts.
Miles Mikolas
Miles Mikolas Cruises to second win
Sun, May 11, 2025, 3:52 PM
Mikolas (2-2) earned the win Sunday at Washington, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: Mikolas looked solid again, as the only blemish on his line was a Nathaniel Lowe solo homer in the fourth. The St. Louis right-hander fired only 69 pitches in this outing, and the Cardinals have found success deploying Mikolas in shorter stints. Across his last five starts, the 36-year-old has pitched to a 2.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB over 26.1 innings. Mikolas currently lines up to take his next turn in the rotation at Kansas City next weekend.
Pedro Pages
Pedro Pages Set to lose time to Herrera
Sun, May 11, 2025, 10:09 AM
Pages is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.
Analysis: Pages started behind the dish in each of the previous three games, but he's likely to see his playing time take a hit moving forward after the Cardinals activated No. 1 backstop Ivan Herrera (knee) from the injured list Friday. Herrera has made both of his first two starts since returning as a designated hitter, but he should see the bulk of his starts as a catcher when the Cardinals face righties.
